To All Prabasi Members & Donors:

I write as the newly elected President of Prabasi, a Boston based Indian organization established in 1981. Prabasi is a non-profit, tax exempt organization registered in Massachusetts . At its conception, Prabasi consisted of only a few Indian families who had immigrated to the United States from the Bengal region of India. Prabasi was formed by these Indian families with the hopes of celebrating and preserving the Bengali and Indian culture that they had left behind in a home over eight thousand miles away.

Over the past twenty-six years, Prabasi has flourished as an organization. Our community currently encompasses several thousand Indian and non-Indians from the entire New England area. Each year Prabasi hosts several events, which are aimed to promote Bengali cultural and religious awareness within our community. To meet this endeavor, we encourage our members to participate in cultural and educational programs. We also invite various authors, poets and performing artists from India to our events, so our members have the opportunity to experience the cultural developments that are occurring back in India.

Prabasi has a long history of being involved in community service, which includes volunteering in Boston area soup kitchens, creating college education scholarship funds for deserving high school students, hosting blood and bone marrow donation drives, collecting clothes for Mother Teresa's Home, and raising money for natural disaster relief.

Prabasi’s continued growth has allowed us to become ambitious in our ability to serve a larger community. It is my personal belief that Indian immigrants residing in United States have a moral obligation to attend the needs of those living in India, who are less fortunate than us. Therefore, I have recently proposed creating a philanthropic branch of Prabasi whose objective will be to identify ways Prabasi can make contributions to underdeveloped communities in India. Our goals, at first, will be modest, but meaningful. For example, with one donation Prabasi can provide books and supplies for a village school in India. Through another pledge, Prabasi can finance the construction of a tube well, which will give access to clean water for a village. Over time, as support for our philanthropic mission increases, Prabasi can make greater advancements in serving the needs of the poor in India.

I urge you to support Prabasi in this new initiative. Your donations will provide for our philanthropic mission and all of Prabasi’s other community service activities. You can monitor our progress on Prabasi’s website, www.Prabasione.org, where we regularly post updates. As a final note, I want to mention that we welcome donations in any amount. Every donation, regardless of its size, makes a difference in helping us meet our goal. I thank you very much for your support.

Very truly yours,

Arunangshu Mukherjee,
