Call for submissions, Prabasi magazine 2010Like every year, Prabasi's Puja celebration brings with it the Prabasi magazine. It is one way to tap the community's creative life , a chance to find out about our children's powers of expression, our spouse's hidden writing talent, a friend's interesting imaginary world, and your very own literary skills.SUBMISSION RULES Please send in your submissions ,(either a short story , a poem , an essay , an intriguing anecdote about a famous person , a short run of vignettes or interesting general knowledge triviae that will make your friends sit up and say -- wow ! ) to the following address either by e-mail or regular post Gouri Datta 132 Rosalie Rd Newton, MA 02459 e-mail : sgndatta@yahoo.com The deadline for camera -ready typed submissions is the 22nd of August, 2010 . For submissions that will require typing by the Magazine Team , an earlier deadline of August 12th is being requested. Please hurry and put on your writing and art hats. Parameters of submissions Stories: maximum 3 typed pages Memoir abstract: maximum of 2 typed pages Poem: either 1 long or 2 short ones , not covering more than 1 page. Art work: in black and white only Each person may submit only 1item of writing. We will strictly adhere to the above limitations. SUGGESTED THEME FOR ADULTS Many of us are not literary writers but are good at other kinds of writing e.g.technical writing, penning fun letters, thoughtful commentaries.or erudite research papers. There is current rising tide of interest in writing memoirs. This is possibly to counterbalance the fragmentation of joint families, the uncertainty of times, and a recognition that the written word may be a way to relay histories to posterity--be it for the very next generation or be it for an excavator centuries later in search of the American Mohen-jo-daro or Harappa. Along these lines, we would like to request people who are interested to write on the topic " A Day of My Life at my Job ". Our loved ones especially our children would be interested in knowing what exactly their Dads and Moms do at their respective work, and what a typical day is with its challenges, whether it be engineering, accounting, lawyering, teaching or doctoring , and how we slay our dragons or are almost slain by them to rise again. --So please write a piece, either in Bengali or English, for the sake of immigrant history, for the sake of our children or just for fun..A size of upto two typed pages or less SUGGESTED TOPICS FOR CHILDREN In the past few years there has been a particular theme or topic suggested to engage our children in writing for the magazine. This being Sri Rabindranath Tagore's signal anniversary year, we suggest: a) Translate a stanza or two of Tagor's poetry from Bengali to English b) Write a summary of one of Tagore's dance dramas or one of his short stories in your own words , either in Bengali ( preferred ) or English . Parents may help ,so this would be a good opportunity for parent-child interaction time ADVERTISEMENTS Advertisements have been the life blood of most journals and magazines in order to sustain viability. We need help w obtaining advertisements --one from commercial entities.,like stores, businesses, corporations, and the other--personal ads from one community member to others, from a friend to other friends. Some of us have a knack for influencing and inspiring commercial enterprises to donate; others can work similar wonders in collecting personal ads from receptive friends. Puja is a season for personal greetings, which could be parlayed into the abstract of spreading sweetness and light, and the tangibles of paying for community activities and the magazine itself Here are the prices for ads Full page -- $100 Half page-- $60 Quarter page-- $35 Color, full-- $120 Color, half-- $80 Front inside-- $150 Back inside-- $150 This is the form to fill out if you want to advertise.
